Reading your water meter
You can keep track of the amount of water being used by members of your household by reading your meter regularly.

Where billing is concerned you only need to read the white numbers (on a black background) which measure the kilolitres. The Water Corporation only bills for kilolitres used. (1000 litres=1kl)
Reading your water meter regularly and keeping a simple record of your water use can help you alter your usage habits to suit your budget. Your water meter can also help you to detect possible leaks.
Your water meter is generally located at the front of your property just inside the boundary (the border between your property and the local authority verge area) and is usually in line with the front garden tap.
You can read the red numbers to see how much water your average shower, laundry cycle or dishwasher uses. Just make sure to turn off all other water using appliances to give you an accurate reading.

Spare a thought for your meter reader
During the year, Water Corporation representatives will need to access your property to read your water meter. It only takes a few moments to read your meter but this simple job is sometimes made difficult and unsafe.
The next time you are working in the garden, take a few moments to check the area around your meter and ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you need to trim bushes, tree limbs or move any obstructions in order to access the meter?
- Do you have to duck down or crawl to be able to read your meter?
If the answer to any of the above is yes, our reader will have trouble finding and or reading your meter.
The water meter can also act as a conductor of electricity which may result in an electrical shock to our meter readers. To prevent this, our meter readers use special electrical clamps that are attached to the meter. However, this equipment can't used if there isn't sufficient space around your meter to carry out the necessary maintenance works.
Here are some simple things you can do to help:
- Ensure there is a clear space of at least 30cm around, 20cm below and 120cm above your water meter.
- Clear sand and mulch and prune overgrown bushes.
- If you have a dog, display a sign.
- If the reader is unable to access your meter, we will leave a card asking you to call us and make suitable alternative arrangements.
