Rates and charges
Find out here all about about our rates, charges and prices for residential customers in the metropolitan area.
We issue two types of accounts, service charges and water use charges. Annual service charges for water and sewerage are issued in July, and water use charges are issued every six months.
Annual service charges
All properties with access to our water main or wastewater (sewer) main pay annual service charges. If your property is located within a declared drainage area, you may also need to pay a drainage service charge.
Water service charges
The water service charge from June 2012 – June 2013 is $188.10.
Sewerage and drainage service charges
Sewerage and drainage charges are based on your property’s Gross Rental Value (GRV), which is supplied by the Valuer General. The charge is calculated by multiplying a rate (cents in the dollar) by the GRV.
The sewerage tariffs for 2012 – 2013 are:
- 4.23 cents for each dollar of the first $16 700 of the GRV,
- and 0.79 cents for each dollar thereafter.
(The minimum sewerage charge is $313.20).
The drainage tariffs for 2012 – 2013 are:
- 0.514 cents for each dollar of the rateable value
(The minimum drainage charge is $88.30).
Water use charges
We read meters and issue water use charges twice a year. To encourage the careful use of water, charges are structured so that the price per kilolitre increases as more water is used throughout the financial year.

Example water use bill calculation
If you have used 175 kL at the first reading between July – December 2012, and 200 kL at the second reading between January – June 2013, you would be charged as follows:
Jul – December 2012 meter read and bill
150 kL at $1.192 /kL = $178.80
Next 25 kL at $1.535 /kL = $38.38
Water bill = $217.20
January – June 2013 meter read and bill
200 kL used – in this example as you have already recorded over 150 kL from your previous reading, this meter read will be charged at the second price tier.
Next 200 kL at $1.747 = $349.40
Water bill = $349.40
