Our water sources: dams, catchments and rainfall

With Fresh Water Thinking we’re looking at our dams and catchments in new ways. Years of below average rainfall means that Perth’s catchments areas have become drier and drier. we are helping our dams by using them to store water from more climate-independent sources such as desalination.

While waiting for the shower or bath water to heat up, capture it in a bucket, it's precious water that can be used on the garden or pot plants.

Groundwater is a very important water source in Western Australia. Groundwater treatment plants generally clean water using the following processes: aeration, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection.  

Groundwater often contains organic material and colour that needs to be removed. The colour comes from the natural colours of the earth (e.g dyes from leaves, grass, soil) and turbidity (clay deposits). This video will provide you with all the things you will need to carry out experiment and experiment outline.

Lesson plan of the month: How plants drink (under the microscope) 

Aimed at year 3-6 students this lesson teaches students how water moves from roots up to other parts of the plant and are essentially a plant’s water pipeline.

Peek inside a groundwater treatment plant


In Perth we have 4 main sources of drinking water – surface water, groundwater, seawater and groundwater replenishment.

Our vast groundwater system provides about 40% of our drinking water, which comes from groundwater which is made up from rain which has percolated down through the rocks and soils and into our aquifers. Our bores extract water that can go down up to 800 meters.
