On the road to an inclusive workplace

It’s time to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. And what better way to do so than tell the story of one our valued team members – Craig.

It has been two years since Craig became our grounds person at the Busselton Depot. He is such a big part of the team now, it’s hard to picture life before him. 

Craig’s past career saw him driving trucks for a decade. But two years ago, his life was turned upside down. He was diagnosed with a hereditary, degenerative medical condition. To look after his health, Craig had to make serious life and career adjustments, which was no small feat.

Opening doors to inclusive opportunities 

At the time, Water Corporation was working closely with a not-for-profit organisation - Forrest Personnel. They are set up to find employment opportunities for people with injuries, illness or disabilities.

Leeuwin District Operations Manager, Josh Jackson, explained: “It’s something we’ve always felt passionate about - give opportunities to those who have limited opportunities due to their personal circumstances.”

Craig was soon identified as a great fit for the Busselton team. Josh led the charge with formalising the employment: 

“In the past, depot maintenance and gardening was something we would pay a contractor for, a couple of times a year. Getting Craig on board to chip away a few hours every week has been a real win-win outcome for us all.”

An essential cog in the wheel 

Although it has been a huge adjustment for Craig, he is grateful for the opportunity to work for Water Corporation. Being a Busselton local, he said he really enjoys how close to work he lives and the low-stress nature of his role. 

“I’m a real outdoors person. I can ride my bike along the beach to work and spend the day outside in the garden which really helps me to stay in a positive frame of mind.”

It’s not just Craig that has noticed the benefits to his new lifestyle. “I’ve really noticed a positive change in Craig since he started. He has a real spring in his step now and the depot gardens are looking fantastic. It really uplifts the morale around the office,” Josh said. 

Craig hopes Water Corporation will continue creating opportunities for others in the future. 

Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations observed day. It is aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. 

We firmly believe an inclusive workplace helps us better serve our diverse customer base across the state. Everyone deserves a chance to bring their true self to work.
