Water Corporation has earned national recognition for its work to attract and retain talented employees, becoming one of only two WA organisations nominated for a 2024 SEEK Talent Acquisition Recognition Award.

The utility was nominated for the Public Sector Team of the Year alongside organisations such as the CSIRO and Tafe NSW.

It highlights the success of Water Corporation’s Great Place to Work strategy, which was launched in 2024 to help foster a diverse and inclusive workplace culture.

According to Sarah Bagshawe, Water Corporation General Manager People and Safety, the level of competition for high-calibre employees has prompted a rethink of traditional hiring strategies in the public sector.

“In WA perhaps more than anywhere else in Australia, the public sector understands the level of competition that exists for experienced, talented employees,” Ms Bagshawe said.

“With a national unemployment rate of just 3.7 per cent, it’s meant we’ve really needed to refocus on what matters most to the people we’re hoping to attract.

“For most, that’s about enjoying a healthy work-life balance while feeling comfortable bringing their whole self to work and still enjoying a great salary and career progression opportunities.

“This has underpinned our recent approach to talent acquisition. By better understanding the needs of prospective candidates, we can more easily determine whether we’re the right fit for them and if they’re the right fit for us.”

Since its launch, Water Corporation’s Great Place to Work strategy has helped drive a 9 per cent increase in culturally and linguistically diverse employees and a 3 per cent increase in women in senior leadership positions.

In 2023, Water Corporation also earned national recognition as one of the top and most inclusive employers in Australia at the AFR BOSS Best Places to Work 2023 awards.

The SEEK Talent Acquisition Recognition Awards celebrate excellence in talent acquisition and acknowledge the outstanding work of internal talent and HR teams, highlighting their contributions to the success of their organisations.
