Bibra Lake Treatment Facility
Project goal:
As an operational priority, we continue to investigate long-term solutions to effectively manage odour from a wastewater facility in the Bibra Lake area. This facility filters gas from a network of large wastewater pipelines that converge near Bibra Drive. These critical pipelines carry much of the wastewater from the southern metropolitan area to Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Status:
In progress
Delivery Date:
Refurbishment works have now been completed. While additional monitoring and research are ongoing, we expect the facility to resume operating in February 2025.
January update
The upgrades completed last year, included the following improvements at this facility:
- improved pipe connections
- fresh air inlet for better ventilation
- new fan to enhance air circulation
- noise-reducing enclosure
- upgraded filtration materials in the treatment tanks.
Following these upgrades, we installed monitoring equipment at this site and will now be turning this facility back on in February 2025.
During February we will be undertaking some final activities at this site, including adding the new filtration materials to the treatment tanks, turning the facility back on and continuing further monitoring of this infrastructure.
These activities will involve a small project team working at this site, using construction vehicles and equipment, from 3 February to 14 February, 2025. Monitoring will also be conducted to check the upgraded system is operating correctly.
Working hours will be 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Where is it happening?
All work activities are taking place at the treatment facility next to the drainage pump station on Bibra Drive, Bibra Lake.
When is it happening?
The upgrades have been completed. We began site works in May 2024 for the new monitoring equipment and we expect the facility to be turned back on in February 2025. Residents nearby will be notified before both the equipment installation and the facility restart.
Why is this work important?
A well-functioning odour control facility is vital to maintain the condition and lifespan of our wastewater pipelines and will provide valuable data to inform our longer-term wastewater network planning.
In response to feedback from nearby residents regarding occasional odours from the facility, we consider this project an operational priority in the interest of reaching a long-term solution.
What are the impacts?
Temporary, intermittent odour may be experienced when the site is switched on to operate at full capacity again, in February 2025. We will provide further notification before the facility is reinstated, as well as continuous and thorough monitoring, so that we can resolve any odour issues as promptly and effectively as possible.
We are mindful of the impact caused by odour and treat these issues as a priority. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience residents may experience while work is in progress and invite you to provide your feedback and report odour via our 24-hour Faults, Emergencies and Security line on 13 13 75.
