Derby Monitoring Bores
Project goal:
We are constructing three new groundwater monitoring bores to ensure the reliability of water supply to Derby. The previous bores were installed over 30 years ago and require replacement bores.
Status:
In Construction
Delivery Date:
November 2024
What’s happening?
Water Corporation will soon start work to construct three new groundwater monitoring bores in Derby. The previous bores were installed over 30 years ago and require replacement.
Monitoring bores are used to sample groundwater level and salinity to monitor the reliability of Derby’s water supply. Data collected by monitoring bores also allows us to sustainably manage the groundwater aquifer that supplies Derby.
Where is this happening?
Water Corporation has been working with the Shire of Derby - West Kimberley to select sites for the replacement monitoring bores. The sites for the three new monitoring bores are relatively close to the existing bores being replaced. This is so samples from the new bores are comparable to the old bores.
The monitoring bores will be constructed at the following three locations:
- Bore 1: Elder Street (behind Mary Island Fishing Club)
- Bore 2: Corner of Knowsley St E and Lovegrove Street
- Bore 3: Behind Kurrajong Loop (next to existing pump station)
There is also a proposed backup bore location at 36 Loch Street. However, this site may not be required depending on the results from the other bore locations.
When is this happening?
Early surveying work of the sites will take place from Thursday 15 August. Drilling is planned to begin on the first bore at Elder Street from Friday 23 August.
Drilling of the three bores will take place one after the other starting with Bore 1 and ending with Bore 3. Each bore will take approximately three to four weeks to complete with Bore 3 expected to be completed by early November 2024.
Works will be Monday to Sunday from 7am – 6pm, with noise restrictions on certain days
How will this impact me?
Residents and businesses near the bore sites may notice construction activity. As with any construction, there will be an increase in noise and some vibration activity in the area. A drilling rig and other machinery will be needed on site to construct the bores.
We appreciate that this essential work may cause temporary inconvenience and disruption during construction. Monitoring bores are relatively small with the surrounding space unaffected.
All Water Corporation employees and contractors endeavour to minimise disruption where possible and will ensure access to private property is not restricted.
We thank you for your understanding and cooperation whilst this essential work takes place.

Bore 2 will be constructed on the corner of Knowsley Street East and Lovegrove Street (see image below). Bore 2 is expected to take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete.
Work is expected to start on the Bore 3 – behind Kurrajong Loop from Thursday 10 October 2024.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm Monday – Sunday, with some noise restrictions on certain days and will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete.
