A rounded shrub to 1.5 metres high and 1 metre wide with dense bluish grey-green, aromatic foliage and blue to purple flowers on long stems in spring and summer. Many selections have been made. Plants closely related to this one are known to be weeds in other parts of Australia.

Cultivars include 'Ashdowne Forest', 'Bee', 'Bosisto', 'Hidcote', 'Imperial Gem', 'Little Lottie', 'Miss Katherine', 'Miss Muffet', 'Munstead', 'Nana Alba', 'Nana Atropurpurea' and 'Rosea'.
