Loquat

Family: ROSACEAE
Genus: Eriobotrya
Species: japonica
view favourites

A small, evergreen tree from south east China. Large, dark green leaves quickly form a dense canopy. Clusters of pale golden-yellow flowers in winter are followed by yellow orange fruits with several large seeds. Loquats are the first fruit of the season so fruit fly control is vital to prevent later and larger infestations.

Pronunciation: Erio-bot-ra

Warning: High harm potential seeds are an irritant if eaten, this applies to stock and other animals as well. Not recommended for planting near bushland.
