A hardy, evergreen tree to as much as 15 metres high and 7 metres wide. Will withstand full coastal exposure. Dense, dark green foliage and clusters of red flowers in early summer.
Selected cultivars are usually smaller and more compact and include 'Lighthouse', 'Midas', 'Moon Maiden', 'Pink Lady', 'Variegated' and 'Vibrance'.
