Similar to M. collina in growth habit and flower. The main difference is the leaves which are a deep, glossy green.

Cultivars include 'Crimson Glory' (3 metres high by 2 metres wide, bright red flowers), 'Dalese' (1.5 metres red flowers), 'Lemon Twist' (compact to 1.5 metres high and wide, green and yellow variegated foliage), 'Mini Xmas' (compact 1 metre high and wide), 'Red Baby' (2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide, green foliage and red flowers) and 'Variegata' (2 metres high with variegated foliage and crimson flowers), 'Thomasi' (3 metres high with orange-red flowers).
