A decorative small deciduous tree with large showy pink or white flowers in spring followed by hard fruits similar to an apple. Very hardy once established, but grows best when protected from the wind. Easily trained to shape making it suitable to espalier. Cultivars selected for fruit include 'Champion' (early season, smallish round fruit) and 'Smyrna' (large fruit with golden-yellow aromatic flesh at maturity).
