Fresh home for local nursery unites community
Society for Kimberley Indigenous Plants and Animals (SKIPA) now have a new home for their plant nursery. This milestone is a big step for the Broome community group which has worked hard to promote a greater appreciation for the region's unique plants and animals.
SKIPA aims to share knowledge and help the community learn about Kimberley plants and animals. They bring people together in a safe and welcoming space for land care activities.
With the changing climate, there's an increasing interest in native plants that need less water. SKIPA has played a key role in supporting these plants. They thrive in the Kimberley’s harsh environment and need little water and care. They are the only regular source of native plants for Broome residents.
In 2024, SKIPA was one of the recipients of the Kimberley Community Grants Scheme (KCGS). This has allowed them to shift from working in members' backyards to a central spot. Now, they can gather, connect and carry on with their important work.
SKIPA members enjoying their new location
The new home for SKIPA's nursery is a hub for community engagement and ecological education. With a dedicated site, they can host more events, workshops and 'busy bees' to grow native plants and design the nursery layout. This space encourages more teamwork with local Aboriginal not-for-profit development and business groups like Nyamba Buru Yawuru Limited. It helps members gain traditional knowledge.
Kylie Weatherall from SKIPA shared, "Having the new home will help us grow a meaningful community built around an empowering ecological purpose." This new chapter promises more opportunities for knowledge sharing, friendship and a stronger, more connected community in Broome.
